Tinsley cooling towers will be demolished in the early hours of Sunday 24 August.

E.On said a viewing platform would be set up so people could watch the towers being demolished.

Pretty much what our Ben says below.
They were always the signal that I'd got home - turning that last corner on the motorway and seeing them and the crane and the sun setting...
I know they weren't popular with many people, but to me they were always a symbol of home.

I know what you mean, they were always a landmark for me. I worked in Tinsley Area for 12 years, and always thought they couldn't knock them down cos of danger to M1. Didn't they get nuked in Threads as well?

'Tis a pity (I kinda like them in a 'landmark that means I'm nearly home' way) but can't say I'm heartbroken.

I would be nice if the station that replces them has something similarly large and highly visible, but I must say I'm doubtful..

Anyone want to lay odds on them falling the wrong way and crushing the flyover? That would be.. embarrassing
